Youth Services Librarian

In collaboration with the Youth Department, the Youth Services Librarian promotes, plans, and carries out a wide variety of library services and programs geared towards children and teens. The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for providing a welcoming and engaging library environment for children, teens, families and caregivers. 

This position reports to the Library Director.

  • Prioritizes team collaboration and communication within the Youth Department and with the Library at large.
  • Promotes library services and events through flyers, social media, and local news organizations.
  • Assists in the development of and implementation of youth department programming.
  • Curates and maintains materials within the Youth Department’s collection.
  • Upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records as stated in Michigan statutes.
  •  Participates in community outreach activities and presentations to local schools and community organizations.
  • Recommends funding and budget requests for children’s programs to the Library Director.
  • Opens and closes the Children’s Area as needed.

 

Experience and Education Requirements and Preference

  1. A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution, or enrollment within an MLIS program, is preferred.
  1. Management and supervisory responsibility or two years of progressively more responsible library management experience preferred.
  1. Library course work in selection, programming, and children’s & young adult materials preferred.
  2. Knowledge of computers, mobile devices, Google Calendar, Microsoft Office, Windows, library media streaming platforms, and electronic information resources including the Internet and Internet browsers.

16-20hrs/week, $18-$22/hr depending upon experience.

Student Liaison

The primary responsibility of this position is shelving books, assisting with circulation staff, and providing general support to library staff. The secondary responsibilities are to act as a bridge between Harper Woods High School and the Harper Woods Public Library, connecting students with library resources and services relevant to their needs. In this secondary capacity, the Student Liaison is expected to propose social media messaging and programming within the Youth Department.  

This position reports to the Circulation Manager. 

Must be at least 15 years of age and have completed grade 9

  • Must be self-motivated, friendly and courteous.
  • Library knowledge and/or experience is an asset.
  • Willingness to uphold the mission and vision of the library including accessible customer service,

equal access and intellectual freedom.

  • Must be able to work independently, following procedures with minimum supervision.

If under the age of 18, a work permit is required prior to starting work. 

8-12hrs/week. $12-13/hr
